The journey begins at the local docks of Murighiol, a primary tourist hub about 42 km from Tulcea by road. The name stems from the Turkish Murughiol, meaning “violet lake”, a reference to the water’s hues at sunset.
2. Dunăvăț Canal
A major, wide and deep arterial canal that historically connected the Sfântu Gheorghe branch of the Danube directly to the Razim-Sinoe lagoon. Because it is wider, you will encounter more boat traffic before branching off into the wilder sections.
3. Cocoș & Mustaca Canals
These two channels are the quintessential Danube Delta experience: narrow, slow-flowing and heavily choked with vegetation. You will navigate beneath arches of weeping willows and reed beds. Due to the light traffic, this is where you are most likely to surprise hunting herons or discover hidden families of wild ducks.
4. The Centură Canal
This canal acts as a perimeter buffer channel wrapping around the agricultural enclosures and wetlands bordering the great Lake Razim. It features an open landscape where the reed beds drop away, giving sweeping views of the southern plains of the delta.
5. Dranov Canal
Similar to Dunăvăț, Dranov is a large engineered canal. Highly scenic, it is lined with tall poplars and dense reed walls. It provides the straight northern trajectory needed to close the loop and guide your boat safely back to the main river branch leading to Murighiol.
